However, after a year long investigation, CNN found that the South Carolina government was actually adding a substance called HaloSan to one of the city’s four wells. HaloSan was being added to the water in an attempt to regulate naturally occurring iron bacteria to help alleviate the red stains the town’s tap water was leaving in people’s homes. However, HaloSan has not been approved for use as a disinfectant for drinking water by the US Environmental Protection Agency. Many Denmark residents believe the use of HaloSan has resulted in their health problems.
